Andrew Kim, newly named music director of the New York Youth Symphony.
Andrew Kim has been appointed music director of the New York Youth Symphony, beginning in the 2023-2024 season. He succeeds Michael Repper, who led the orchestra for six years. Kim is currently a James Sample Fellow of Orchestral Conducting at the University of Minnesota, studying with Mark Russell Smith. At UMN he serves as assistant conductor of the University Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Theatre. He is co-director of the University’s Campus Orchestra program, which helps nearly 200 non-major students every semester to stay engaged with music during their studies and beyond. In the 2021-2022 season, he was assistant conductor of the Duluth Superior Symphony Orchestra and conductor of the Duluth Superior Symphony Youth Orchestra. He has served as teaching assistant for Miguel Harth-Bedoya at the Conducting Institute since 2020. Kim has worked with professional orchestras in the U.S. and abroad and was an associate conductor at the conductors’ workshop at the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music. Kim received his master’s degree at Ithaca College and studied Music and English Literature at Swarthmore College. He leads the New York Youth Symphony and guest artist Augustin Hadelich at Carnegie Hall on November 19 in works by Tchaikovsky and Sibelius and the world premiere of Christian Quiñones’s Fever is How the Body Prays.
